School Garden

For thirty years I balanced my photographic work with also teaching middle grade students math, science, fine arts, and organic gardening. I In 1985, a few friends and I established a school garden in Somerset, California. Moving to the Yuba City area in 1989, I iniated two creative school gardens projects. In 1997, I received a commission from the California Department of Education to produce a large format wall poster and to draft the vision statement for the State Superintendent of School at the time, promoting, A Garden in Every School.
Here you see images from the garden my students and I have created. It is astounding how few children have truly touched the earth and know first hand where and how their food grows. In this garden children grow organic greens, vegetables, and flowers from seeds they start in our greenhouse. From there they transplant out into the garden to observe and nurture to maturity. By mid-winter and early spring these lucky kids are feasting upon the freshest and most vital food. They even learn how to make their own potato chips from Yukon gold and all blue potatoes. Here is a link to web feature about the Barry School Garden I created that received much recognition –
